About BECS - How We're Different


BECS was established with a specific core of engineering expertise geared toward serving multi-residential condominium and home owners' associations, small to large-scale commercial clients clients and real estate investment portfolios, and service industries such as hotels and resorts. We recognized trends suggesting the need for increased investigative capacity through engineering study and surveys coupled with performance based Contractor selection in order to reduce call backs, improve quality, limit disruption, and reduce project costs.

BECS staff are licensed in the following states: Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Our Approach

Our approach is to place professionals with vast experience and exposure to numerous projects in the field where they are able to gain first hand knowledge of the structure in question and communicate directly with those performing the work. This approach eliminates tiers of bureaucracy, which can result in miscommunication, errors, and inflated costs.

Some of the best training and business relationships are achieved and developed by becoming involved with professional organizations that produce industry standards and guidelines and set the bar for industry protocol. Bridging the gap between those organizations and our clients requires strategic placement of specialty knowledge individuals within specific groups. Diversity is important as long as it occurs within a certain field and enhances existing knowledge. We take pride in our involvement in a selective group of professional trade organizations and also the client based organizations they serve.

Steven has been involved in the construction industry since 1993 in capacities such as structural engineer, senior project manager, consulting engineer, and quality assurance. He has two BS degrees, one in Civil Engineering and one in Physical Sciences. Steven is a certified professional engineer and maintains memberships in professional associations.

As an owner of Building Envelope Consultants and Scientists, LLC, Steven prepares, reviews and approves design concepts for steel, concrete, masonry, and wood framed restoration projects. He guides projects from survey to punch-out as needed to maintain client contact, delivery time for his services, and project budgets. Steven oversees field engineers and waterproofing staff, the drafting department, and administrative personnel.

Mark HowellMark K. Howell
Executive Vice President

Mark has a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management Technology and two Associate degrees; Civil Engineering Technology and Architectural Technology. He is a recognized leader in the building envelope preservation and performance industry and has been involved in the investigation and restoration of many contemporary and historic structures over his 25 plus year career. Mark also belongs to the Association for Preservation Technology International as well as RCI - Roofing, Waterproofing, Exterior Wall Consultants, Inc.

Mark has made numerous presentations at national industry conferences as well as owners organizations and is a continuing education provider for the American Institute of Architects and a BOMI certified trainer for the Building Owner Manager Association. Over the years he has published articles and made presentations regarding the access of structures, building envelope technologies, the use of mock ups, solving roof problems, historic preservation, corrosion solutions, and masonry strengthening as well as other technology and building preservation topics. Mark is a former adjunct teacher for the Preservation Program at Harford Community College and has been a guest lecturer for several colleges and universities.

Steve BentzSteve Bentz, P.E., R.B.E.C.
Vice President

Steve is a Professional Engineer in four states (VA, MD, PA, and NY) and the District of Columbia and a member of RCI and ASTM and an active participant in the SWR Institute. Steve holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University.

Steve has significant experience in building enclosure and repair/restoration design including roofing and waterproofing, historic facades and roofs, curtainwall systems, below-grade waterproofing, plaza systems, Local Law 11/FISP (NYC) façade inspections, weld inspections, structural repair designs, parking garage repairs, masonry repairs, stone repairs, and a host of other building enclosure systems. Additionally, Steve has experience in rope-access/difficult access assessments of building facades and stadiums, as well as the design of building fall protection and building access /maintenance systems.

J.P. McDonaldJP McDonald, P.E.
Vice President

JP brings over 15 years of experience as an engineer specializing in the consulting and testing of architectural products and façade assemblies. He has managed and performed quality control and investigative air, water, thermal, acoustic field testing services in addition to expert witness, peer review and product evaluation services.

JP has specialized experience in laboratory product testing, laboratory project mockup testing and on-site field testing relating to air infiltration, water penetration, acoustics and structural performance during new construction or renovation, as well as building enclosure commissioning. His experience extends to building enclosure consulting on new construction projects including shop drawing reviews, submittal reviews, construction administration/inspections, and consulting services regarding building envelope performance.

KJ Rodgers is the Business Development & Marketing Manager for Building Envelope Consultants and Scientists. He is a Marine Corps veteran with specialized experience in delivering program management, multidisciplinary marketing, and strategic communications support.

KJ brings over a decade of business development and marketing experience within the architect/engineering/construction industries and manages communications, project administration, industry associations, and customer service, and community outreach.

Michael HoglundMichael Hoglund, P.E., RRC
Senior Consultant

Mike Hoglund received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1982 from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Mike is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Mike has 32 years of experience consisting of 13 years of general contracting construction experience and 19 years of consulting engineering experience in the repair industry.

His previous construction experience includes a cut and cover tunnel for subway trains, subway station finishes, high-rise office building, and various other commercial and residential construction projects.

His repair industry consulting engineering experience includes site examinations, property condition reports, due diligence reports, reserve replacement reports, creation of specifications and drawings, bidding and evaluation of bids, and construction administration of repair projects.

His repair projects include numerous facades, balconies, pedestrian bridges, roof replacements, waterproofing, garages, various structural repairs, and coating projects.

Dean YatesDean Yates, AIA
Senior Consultant

Dean is a licensed architect with years of experience with design, new construction, renovation and historic preservation projects and has become specialized in the investigating and rehabilitation of existing building enclosure elements. His experience includes performing the building analysis and investigations to assess the existing conditions and to create the repair documents to correct the problems. Dean also has experience in performing on-site construction administration to make sure that the work being performed as per the construction documents and will meet the needs of the owner.

He has performed investigations and repairs on below-grade waterproofing, facades, which has included: concrete, brick masonry, stone, stucco and EIFS, metal panels, and curtain walls, and roofing, which has included: built-up roofing, single-ply membrane, flat and standing seam metal.

Dean also has experience with new construction commissioning, which has included peer document review, shop drawing and submittal review and construction observations. This commissioning work has also included both mock-up and in-situ field performance testing on air-barriers, doors, and windows to verify that the installed building enclosure elements were installed per the specification requirements and meet industry standards.

Senior Project Manager/ Structural Engineer

Michael graduated with a Master degree focused on advanced structural systems, building failures and forensic techniques, and building enclosures. As a professional engineer, he has developed extensive experience in the repair and restoration engineering field with hundreds of projects executed in Virginia, Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and other locals. He has worked with many clients providing a broad scope of engineering and consulting services to private, professional, and government entities.

Michael has provided assessment, design, contract administration, and client consultation for projects that have focused on building and site assets such as roofs, building envelopes, facades and curtainwalls, balconies and plazas, structural systems, parking structures, site-civil and pavements, retaining structures, and others. He also has experience with historical restoration projects and fall protection/building access system analysis and design. In addition to engineering-based services, Michael has experience performing reserve study analyses, due diligence assessments, and condition assessments for capital expense planning.

Project Manager

Nick has more than 8 years of structural engineering experience in new design, repair and renovation of existing structures, and investigation of structural failures. He is experienced with low- to high-rise commercial, residential, and government buildings, foundations, and retaining walls. He is experienced in investigating and designing with steel, mild-reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, masonry, and wood framing for a wide variety of buildings and structures.

As a project manager, Nick is responsible for making quality assurance construction observations, preparing condition surveys and daily field reports, and developing design specifications and repair details.

Trent MasonTrent Mason
Project Manager

Trent has more than ten years of construction and technical experience. He specializes in quality assurance consulting and architectural product testing. With a keen eye for detail, Trent has provided valuable insight to clients by identifying potential issues in design and quality during each phase of construction. He has also personally created and managed building envelope testing programs for several large, high-profile commercial projects. These testing programs focused on mock-up, water penetration, air infiltration, roof uplift, adhesion, and various other quality control tests.

As a project manager, Trent is primarily responsible for: quality assurance observations, forensics investigating, mock-up observation and testing, field and laboratory testing, development of lab standards, documents, templates, software, and equipment. He is also responsible for condition surveys of existing structures, field reports, development of design specifications and repair details, bidding services, and overseeing repairs.

James earned his BS in Civil Engineering in May 2013 from the University of Maryland and is currently a registered EIT in pursuit of a professional engineer license. As a Project Engineer, he makes regular site visits to ensure projects are running smoothly and work is being performed according to strict industry standards. James prepares project documents and contracts, performs condition assessments, and produces in-depth reports based upon his findings in the field.

Patrick O’Brien is an Assistant Project Manager at Building Enclosure Consultants and Scientists, LLC. His experience includes the assessment and restoration of various building enclosure components, including roofing, façade access systems, and exterior wall repairs. Pat provides detailed condition surveys, narratives and reports, repair/construction documents, and quality control through construction administration. His SPRAT and IRATA certifications enable him to perform façade assessments by means of rope access. Pat received his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. He is a currently registered EIT working towards his professional engineering license.
